Airplane nuisances: IATA opposes the proposed restriction of night flights in Brussels

The Minister Ecolo of Mobility puts on the table a reform of the criteria which allow the planes, according to their noise load, to use or not the national airport.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) came out on Friday in favor of the suppression of the proposal of the Minister of Mobility Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo) to fight once morest noise pollution around Brussels airport by prohibiting, among other things, all night flights.

A “premature” proposal

According to IATA, the proposal is “premature” and runs counter to existing international agreements regarding noise pollution at airports. These explicitly state that implementing flight restrictions should only be used as a last resort and only intervene following consultation, cost-benefit analysis and exhaustion of all other possible measures within the framework of the balanced approach.

Rafael Schwartzman, IATA Regional Vice President for Europe, conceded that complaints from residents of the airport regarding noise pollution had to be taken into account. “But it is particularly regrettable that Minister Gilkinet tried to circumvent the balanced approach. Yet it is a long-endorsed method that has shown its effectiveness in controlling noise pollution at airports,” said Mr. Schwartzman, adding that it was “vital that the government abandons this proposal and instead consults the various stakeholders”.
