Last week, information emerged that the Apple you may have to change the name of the Vision Pro (your mixed reality headset) on China — that is, when the company is ready to market the product there.

This is possible since the Huawei registered the trademark “Vision Pro” in the Asian country well before Apple, in May 2019, so that the Chinese giant has exclusive use of the brand at least until the end of 2031.

However, this is not the only (potential) case in which the company would have to change product names due to situations involving trademark registration. As was the agenda in the last episode of MacMagazine no Arthere have been other similar situations throughout the history of Maçã — and two of them were remembered by the reader William Max.

AirMac

The late line of routers AirPort was very popular in the years it was marketed, but it didn’t have that name around the world: in JapanApple had to change to AirMacprecisely because it was unable to register the main trademark in the country.

Records of “alternative” nomenclature are diverse and include support pages it’s from specifications in Japan — in which brands are promoted AirMac Time Capsule, AirMac Extreme e AirMac Express.

It is worth noting that the AirPort brand was acquired in Japan by the company I-O Data for marketing its line of portable routers — that is, the same category of products sold by Maçã, until then.

“Morning Wars”

It is common for movies/series to have different names around the world due to the various translations, depending on the availability of certain content in a country. However, there are situations in which productions are distributed worldwide under the original name — but this is not the case with the series. “The Morning Show”do Apple TV+.

Already Australiathe series starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon is called “Morning Wars” — which, let’s face it, is also a pretty apt name for the production. ????

The reason for the change could not be different: since 2007, there has been a talk show morning broadcast on the Seven Network in Australia called The Morning Showwhich made it impossible for Apple to use the name in its original production.

There are also other situations in which Apple brands were (or still are) at risk of being altered due to registration disputes.

In Brazil, including, the brand iPhone been disputed by Apple and Gradient — and, depending on the outcome of the vote on the Supremo Tribunal Federal about the case, it may be that the Cupertino giant has to take some measure to continue using its smartphone brand.
