Airline to pay fine for transporting undocumented Venezuelans (+Details)

Chile’s National Immigration Service, part of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security, fined the airline JetSmart for transporting Colombian, Peruvian and Venezuelan passengers to the capital of that country without all the necessary documentation.

According to information from local media El Mercurio, the fine amounts to around 98 million pesos (about 106 thousand dollars).

This would be the largest fine imposed on an airline since the regulations came into force.

The measure was introduced due to non-compliance with Law No. 21,325 on Migration and Foreigners, which establishes sanctions for air transport companies that fail to control the documentation of passengers traveling to Chile.

According to regulations, fines for this offence range from 10 to 20 tax units for each offending passenger.

In this regard, the authorities were alerted to the situation through the National Immigration Service in October last year. The entity issued a complaint for non-compliance with the regulations.

Although the Ministry of the Interior indicated that the company’s accounts could be seized, both parties reached an agreement for the airline to pay the amount owed.
