Airline ticket prices continue to rise: “Since the demand is there, companies can afford it”

The first explanation is as follows: the increase in the price of kerosene, which follows the price of oil. For the most distant destinations, the price of fuel takes regarding 40% of the ticket price. Second explanation: the airlines, following the years of Covid, are still trying to recover their health.

For companies, it’s regarding recovering a little bit of the loss“explains Jean Hindriks, president of the Economics School of Louvain.”Because planes grounded, it costs, so it is a question of recovering this shortfall quickly“.

Third explanation: demand is growing. The post-Covid liberation continues to have its effect: everyone wants to get away from it all. On online price comparators, users are encouraged to book quickly so that prices do not increase further. Over the 2021-2022 period, tickets are priced at 22% and over the 2022-2023 period, an additional 25% are announced. How high can it go?

It will depend on demand. Since the demand is there, people want to travel, they can afford to keep pushing prices up“, explains Jean Hindriks. These increases bring the price of the ticket closer to the real cost of air transport, environmental cost included.

In the coming years, the future taxation of kerosene planned by Europe should further increase the prices of these tickets.
