The flight teams that carry out the air transport from the islands to Attica or other urban centers of the region, among which is Patras, which receives incidents mainly from the Ionian islands, run and do not arrive all summer.
The large gaps recorded by regional hospitals and Health Centers in personnel and equipment, but also the movements of the population due to the holidays result in the daily air transports intensifying in the summer months.
Pre-hospital care has been strengthened this summersince EKAV motorcyclists are on the big islands, assisting the ambulances and arriving on time at the incidents, gaining significant time in their care and, by extension, saving lives. At the same time, more ambulances are operating since last yearas they have been reinforced with guides from the Armed Forces.
The above measureshowever, they aim at primary treatment, as they explain well knowing the field of Health, and they do not stop the need for air freightwhich is basically related to the understaffing of the health formations, the absence of specific nodal departments to deal with emergencies and the absence of critical medical specialties.
It is characteristic that especially the last two monthswhere the tourist traffic on the islands has hit “red”, daily… battle is fought by six flying groups that operate around the clock. Two flying groups are stable in Eleusis, in the same area there is still one on alert for days with several incidents, while one flying group has bases in Syros, Rhodes and Aktio.
THE CAUSE
The source of evil is understaffing and the under-functioning of regional hospitals. Don’t forget that doctors from Patras regularly travel to the Ionian Islands to cover urgent vacancies in the nursing units there. For example, a cardiology case that needs a heart attack unit and is on an island will necessarily be airlifted. Accordingly, a serious traffic accident that requires a neurosurgeon, a specialty that may not exist in a regional Health structure.
It is known that the Ministry of Health announces positions for permanent recruitment of doctors, but no interest is expressed.
In the meantime, as reported on ygeiamou.gr for the second year in a row, the movement of rescuers-motorcyclists from Athens EKAV to tourist areas reduces response timesoffering assistance to increased needs. The rescuers with their motorbikes have moved to Kos, Paros, Naxos, Mykonos, Santorini and also Halkidiki (3 motorbikes), in order to offer timely and effective emergency pre-hospital care, reinforcing and assisting the EKAB ambulances.
Tinos and Syros were reinforced this year with EKAV Rapid Response motorcycles. At the same time, Rapid Response motorcycles are already operating outside of Athens, in Thessaloniki, in Patras, in Heraklion of Crete, in Rhodes, in Volos, in Corfu, but also in the area of Tuzla, in Kavala. The offer of motorcycle rescuers continues with the activation of other permanent motorcycle sectors: in Larissa, Alexandroupoli, Chania and Mytilini, while the Rhodes, Heraklion and Volos sectors are further strengthened.
