Coordinating MINISTER for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said El Nino affected world food conditions, including Indonesia. As a result, the price of rice rose.
“Since December 2023, Indonesia has experienced the impact of El Nino so that several food production places, especially rice, have experienced disruption,” said Airlangga at the Constitutional Court (MK) Building, Central Jakarta, Friday (5/5).
Airlangga said this meant that farmers might not plant rice. Including, making the harvest schedule back.
“This disrupts the supply of food such as rice and of course it is very disturbing and has a significant impact on the poor,” he said.
Airlangga said similar conditions were experienced by other countries. For example, the price of rice in Thailand reached US$624 per ton as of January 2024. This figure has increased by 27.65% year on year (YoY).
“And Vietnam, the price is US$614 per ton or an increase of 41.95 YoY,” explained the General Chair of the Golkar Party.
This condition, said AIrlangga, made Indonesia distribute social assistance (bansos). This policy is also carried out by other countries.
“For example, Singapore gives S$800 per person to overcome the rising cost of living,” he explained. (Z-1)
