Golkar Party General Chair Airlangga Hartarto responded to the change in nomenclature of the Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres) to the Supreme Advisory Council (DPA), following the Indonesian House of Representatives Legislative Body (Baleg) decided that the Wantimpres Bill would be brought to a plenary meeting to be ratified as a DPR initiative proposal.

The change in nomenclature is said to accommodate President Joko Widodo as a special advisor to President-elect Prabowo Subianto in the next administration. Airlangga admitted that he did not know regarding it.

“We don’t know yet (whether it is to accommodate President Jokowi),” said Airlangga at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (10/7/2024).

Airlangga explained that the revision of the law was a proposal from the DPR to the government. In accordance with the decision of the DPR RI Baleg, the revision of the law will be discussed in a plenary session later. Airlangga views that the revision of the law is possible if there are proposals from a large number of factions.

“If it’s a proposal to change the law, maybe. This has been approved by all factions in the DPR. There has been approval from all factions in the DPR,” he said.

Previously, the drafting of the Wantimpres Bill (RUU) until the agreement to bring it to a plenary meeting was carried out by the DPR RI Legislation Body in one day.

First, the nomenclature of Wantimpres was agreed to be changed to the Supreme Advisory Council (DPA). He ensured that there was no change in function from Wantimpres to DPA.

The DPA, which was tasked with providing advice and considerations to the President, was abolished by Presidential Decree Number 135/M/2003 on July 31, 2003. After the fourth amendment to the 1945 Constitution (UUD).

The abolition of the DPA at that time was carried out as a result of the change in the government system to a parliamentary system.

However, the existence of the DPA was eventually replaced by an advisory council (wantim) which was placed under the President and was responsible to the President. The advisory council was the Wantimpres. In this case, the Wantimpres was not on an equal footing with the president as it was during the DPA era. (Z-8)
