Aire del Golfo: Tribute to the Heroic Singer Diego Gallardo

(CNN Spanish) — Camille Gamarra, partner of Diego Gallardo, known in the artistic world as “Aire del Golfo”, confirmed the singer’s death this Wednesday through a publication on his Instagram account and considered that he died “like a hero”, in the midst of the events violent events unleashed in Guayaquil on January 9.

“You died like a hero, going to protect our son. That love so great without measures is what remains of comfort to us. My children might not have had a better father than you,” Gamarra said in a message dedicated to the singer.

Gallardo is one of at least 8 people who died in Ecuador’s port city following Tuesday’s attacks, officials said at a press conference. The escalation of violence led President Daniel Noboa to decree internal armed conflict.

“If you saw everything you have left behind in music and culture, maybe you would see yourself with the same eyes of pride that I always saw you with every time you were up on stage. You will always have my admiration,” said Gamarra.

The president of the National Assembly, Henry Kronfle, announced on Wednesday that the musician will posthumously receive the distinction of National Hero.

“Diego Gallardo loses his life going to pick up his son from school. These are heroes of the country, gentlemen, heroes of the country and we must recognize it here in the National Assembly,” mentioned Kronfle.

CNN is trying to contact the corresponding authorities to confirm the cause of the artist’s death.

The president of the Professional Football League of Ecuador, Miguel Angel Loor, lamented the death of the artist and confirmed through “Husband, son, brother, grandson, everything first class. My wife’s cousin, my cousin.”

The Ministry of Culture and Heritage of Ecuador expressed its condolences to Gallardo’s family through a message highlighting that the singer “leaves a significant void in Ecuadorian music.”

Among the most popular songs on Aire del Golfo’s official Spotify list are “Mujer Pitahaya”, “However” and “De pie”. The artist became active in 2016 and his music was inspired by his hometown, according to his official description on the platform.

“Thank you for loving me without judging me and for teaching me what a free and infinite love is. Always standing up for our children and now your legacy,” Gamarra said in the message that he accompanied with photos of Gallardo and his family.
