Airbus and LanzaJet, a leading company in the field of sustainable fuelsannounced that they have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to meet the needs of the aviation sector through the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF or Sustainable Aviation Fuel).
The Memorandum of Understanding establishes a relationship between Airbus et LanzaJet to advance the construction of SAF facilities that will utilize the “advanced, proven and exclusive Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology” from LanzaJet. This agreement also aims to accelerate the certification and adoption of the « SAF 100% drop-in » that would allow existing planes to fly without fossil fuel, the Airbus statement said. industry aeronautics is responsible for approximately 2 to 3% global carbon dioxide emissions, and SAF has been identified by airlines, governments and energy leaders as one of the most immediate solutions to decarbonize aviation, including the renewal of fleets with generation aircraft and better operations.
« SAF is the best short-term solution to reducing aviation emissions and this collaboration between LanzaJet and Airbus is a significant step forward in the fight once morest climate change by enabling a global energy transition.”said Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet. “We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Airbus and further increasing our joint impact across the world. »
Technology ATJ LanzaJet’s exclusive use of ethanol low-carbon fuel to create SAF that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70% compared to fossil fuels and can further reduce CO2 emissions through a suite of carbon reduction technologies. SAF produced using LanzaJet’s ATJ technology is an approved alternative fuel compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure.
“We are delighted to expand our partnership with LanzaJet, a leading company in SAF’s production ecosystem. At Airbus, we are committed to supporting SAF as a major lever for reducing CO2 emissions on the decarbonization roadmap”says Julie Kitcher, EVP, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Airbus. “With LanzaJet as a trusted partner, we can support the acceleration of the Alcohol-to-Jet SAF and large-scale production pathway. This collaboration will also explore technological developments to enable Airbus aircraft to be capable of flying up to 100% SAF before the end of the decade. »
The entire ecosystem plays a critical role in ensuring the increased adoption of SAFs. In addition to working on the technical aspects and on concrete SAF projects, LanzaJet and Airbus will therefore study the business opportunities around the world with airlines and other stakeholders.
