Airbus extends its order book thanks to the Turkish company Pegasus

Yesterday evening, the Turkish low-cost airline named Pegasus Airlines, announced that it had ordered 36 Airbus A321neo, the largest version of the European aircraft manufacturer’s star single-aisle aircraft. The company said it was expecting these devices for 2029 even though the Airbus schedule is full until 2029-2030. However, this confusion would be explained by the fact that Pegasus has exercised call options signed for several years. The amount of the transaction, which has not been specified, might be estimated at around 4.67 billion euros according to the Airbus catalog. A figure to put into perspective, because the prices are only rarely respected.

These acquired A321neo will be equipped with 239 seats and will allow the company both to expand and to renew (its) fleet “said the director general of the carrier Güliz Öztürk, quoted in the press release.

Airbus in great shape

This new announcement shows the great shape of the aircraft manufacturer. Airbus is soaring in order intake, with a total of 1,056 gross orders at the end of May following the announcements at the Paris Air Show, almost as many as for all of last year. This is far more than its direct competitor, the American aircraft manufacturer Boeing and its 223 orders at the end of May.

The A321neo single-seater represents 60% of airman orders for the A320 family, i.e. medium-haul single-seater airliners. Airbus also inaugurated a new assembly line for these aircraft on Monday in Blagnac near Toulouse, in order to increase its global production towards its target of 75 per month in the middle of the decade once morest 45 in 2022. For the European aircraft manufacturer , the last dates back to 2018 with the entry into service of its fourth FAL A320 in Hamburg, Germany. Built within the imposing Lagardère factory, originally built for the A380, the new Toulouse FAL is destined to very quickly become one of the essential links in the immense industrial domino necessary for the production of the A320 family.

But at this frenetic pace of orders, can the production rate hold? The European industrial giant, affected by the difficulties of some of its 18,000 suppliers (raw materials, components, labor, etc.), was still struggling at the start of the year to reach the production rate necessary for the manufacture of 720 devices promised to the market in 2023.

Production difficulties

Airbus was still able to deliver 72 commercial aircraft in June, making it possible to catch up with part of its delay. In six months, he has handed over 316 aircraft to the companies: he still has at least 404 to produce in the second half. In 2022, Airbus, which was already counting on 720 aircraft, had to give up its objectives at the end of the year. He had finally delivered only 661.

In its confrontation with Boeing, Airbus has an interest in speeding up the pace or risk being a victim of its own success. He knows he can’t spread out his production too much over time or risk losing attractiveness. An A320 NEO does not have the same interest for an airline if it is not deliverable before six or seven years.

« Next year as in 2025, the number of planes that we will deliver will be determined by the “supply chain” “, emphasizes in the Tribune, Guillaume Faury, Executive Chairman of Airbus. ” In the meantime the airlines need many more planes than we are able to deliver. The gap between need and supply will remain large, likely for a significant number of years ».
