A Paris court acquitted Airbus and Air France in the June 1, 2009, crash of flight AF447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. The crash killed all 228 people on board. This is the biggest disaster in the history of Air France.

The verdict was handed down as part of France’s first trial of manslaughter committed by a corporation. Archyde.com. The maximum penalty under this article is a fine of €225,000, which might be issued to each defendant.

The court acknowledged that a possible cause of the crash was a malfunction of the speed sensors. Moreover, the court took into account that both Airbus and Air France knew regarding the problem since 2002, but only tried to fix it following the plane crashed in 2009.

Despite all this, the court took into account that the investigation into the circumstances of the crash, which occurred more than 13 years ago, did not give a clear answer to the question of what exactly caused the crash of the liner – the aforementioned technical malfunction, pilot error, or some other factor. “A probable causal relationship is not enough to establish the fact of a crime,” the judge said.

Nevertheless, the court ordered the companies to pay compensation to the families of the victims of the crash, without specifying the amount of payments. Hearings on this issue are scheduled for September this year. Air France has already paid compensation to the families of the victims. In total, representatives of 33 countries were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash, but most of the passengers were from Brazil and France – 58 and 61 people, respectively. Thus, in 2010, a Brazilian court ordered Air France to pay the relatives of victims from Brazil a total of 2.04 million reais. And in 2011, a Parisian court ordered the company to pay compensation in the amount of €126,000 to each of the families.
