Air Transat: Direct Flights from Canada to Havana – Boosting Cuban Tourism

2023-12-16 13:35:55

The Canadian airline Air Transat became the first airline company in that country to link in 2023 with the “José Martí” International Airport in Havana from that northern country. Although Canada is the first country that sends tourists to Cuba, there was no direct connection to the Cuban capital until this moment.

According to networks Havana Airport, on the night of this Friday, December 15, the Canadian airline Air Transat was received with a “warm welcome” in said terminal, establishing the route from Montreal to Havana and thus being the only connection with “Canada from the country’s capital.”

“With this airline, the operations served by our air terminals increase this winter season. Until now, Transat will have two weekly arrival frequencies: Monday and Friday and departure Tuesday and Saturday,” reads the online report.

Canada maintains multiple air connections with Cuba, but to “sun and sand” tourist centers such as Varadero, Cayo Coco, Cayo Santamaría or Holguín, with its Guardalavaca beach being one of the favorites of Canadians. Also to Cayo Largo del Sur, on the Isle of Youth.

Canadian tourism in Cuba

According to official data, Tourism in Cuba has not managed to recover from the social and health crisis that has affected the country since 2020. Despite the government’s efforts to invest in hotel infrastructure and promote the island as a safe destination, the numbers indicate that the arrival of international visitors is well below pre-pandemic levels.

In 2019, Cuba received more than 4 million tourists, while in 2023 it was expected to barely exceed 2 million, although this is something that is not believed to be true.

The main markets for tourists to Cuba are Canada, the United States, Russia, Spain, Germany and France, but all of them have registered significant falls compared to the previous year.

The tourism sector, which represents an important source of income for the Cuban economy, continues to face great challenges for its reactivation.
