California, Arizona, Colorado, Michigan, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico were slapped with tipping points for ozone pollution, short-term fine particulate pollution and annual particulate pollution levels, reports Fox Weather citing the American Lung Association 2024 study. The areas also include prominent urban cities and localities such as The Angels, San Diego, Denver, Salt Lake, Sacramento, as per the research report. According to recent data, a staggering 131.2 million Americans, which amounts to two out of five individuals, live in cities with poor air quality degrees. Among these cities, thirty received drop points specifically for ozone and particulate pollution.

Adding to the concern are the 30 counties scattered across the country that have received failing scores for both ozone pollution and small particle pollution, which include daily levels as well as annual exposure. Surprisingly, only 98 metropolitan areas managed to achieve passing grades for ozone pollution, while only 55 metropolitan areas achieved passing grades for short-term particulate pollution.

Most air quality bottlenecks are concentrated in Western states, with California bearing the brunt. Specifically, California accounts for 22 out of the 30 counties that received failing scores across all categories.
