Air pollution issues raise many health-related harms. Several studies have proven that this has an impact on life expectancy by promoting the development of cardiovascular diseases. In addition, recent work has also demonstrated the effects of pollution on the cutaneous pathways, more mainly on the eye contour and vision.
Pollution causes serious eye diseases
It is well known that air pollution and the epidermis do not mix. Indeed, air pollutants contribute to the appearance of spots, acne, skin diseases and a certain sensitivity. However, a lesser-known harm has been revealed by researchers from Inserm (National Institute for Health and Medical Research) and the University of Bordeaux. This study demonstrated that pollution accelerates the aging of the skin covering the eye contour. According to this work, it might even lead to neurodegenerative diseases, such as glaucoma. This disease of the optic nerve goes so far as to render blind.
As pollution is more harmful than we think
To arrive at this result, the researchers conducted a survey for 11 years. From 2009 to 2020, they studied the cases of 683 people aged 75 or over, inhabitants of the Bordeaux community. Their aim was to estimate the pollution exposure of the people observed. They therefore had to undergo eye examinations every two years. To measure the amount of fine particles, the participants were consulted from their homes. This has thus demonstrated that people who live in the center of Bordeaux, where pollution is more intense, have a thinner layer of retinal nerve fibers than those who live in places less exposed to fine particles.
