Airline Air New Zealand has been weighing passengers on international flights since this week before departure. It company wants to find out the average weight of the travelers.

Between May 29 and July 2, ten thousand travelers will be asked if they would like to step on the scale before boarding. According to New Zealand’s national airline, for safety reasons, the pilot must know how much weight is on board and how that weight is distributed over the aircraft.

“We weigh everything that goes on board an aircraft: from cargo to meals and luggage. We use averages for passengers, crew and hand luggage. That is why we are now conducting this research,” the airline reports. In 2021, travelers on domestic flights were already weighed.

Air New Zealand reassures passengers who prefer not to be confronted with their weight. “There’s no visible display. No one can see your weight, including us. It’s completely anonymous.” Moreover, it is voluntary.
