Air India to buy 470 Boeing and Airbus jets for more than $34 billion

Leading Indian airline Air India signed two major contracts for the purchase of Boeing and Airbus aircraft. The American corporation will purchase 220 aircraft for a total of $34 billion – among the models are 737 MAX, 777X and 787 Dreamliner. At the European concern Indians buy a total of 250 aircraft are mainly A-350 and A-320 NEO. The amount of the contract with Airbus was not disclosed.

The first A-350s will be delivered to the Indian airline by the end of this year. About the deal with Airbus was announced during a joint teleconference between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, French President Emmanuel Macron and Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran. Last year, Tata Group bought Air India from the Indian government in an auction for $2.2 billion.

Commenting on Air India’s agreement with Boeing, US President Joseph Biden noted: “This deal will support more than a million jobs in 44 states of our country. This agreement also reflects the strength of the US-India economic partnership. Together with Prime Minister Modi, I am determined to further develop our cooperation.”
