Air France’s Authorization Withdrawn: Diplomatic Tensions Escalate with Mali

In an unexpected escalation of diplomatic tensions, Mali withdrew Air France’s authorization to serve the Paris-Bamako route. This decision comes after the French airline extended without notice its suspension of flights to Mali and Burkina Faso, initially scheduled until Friday.

The initial trigger for this suspension by Air France seems to have been the closure of Niger’s airspace, a direct consequence of the July 26 coup. Concerned about the delicate geopolitical situation in the Sahel region, Air France has seen fit to extend this interruption until August 18.

But this aerial caution was not without consequences. Indeed, the National Civil Aviation Agency of Mali has expressed its frustration with the lack of communication from the French company. According to her, Air France failed to notify its decision in advance, thus causing inconvenience for many travelers.

The agency was clear in its response: the suspension of Air France’s authorization for the summer season, which lasts until October. A strong decision which shows the importance of diplomatic relations, even in the field of aviation. However, all hope is not lost for Air France: Mali has hinted that the company could recover its slot if it offers a new flight program.

The ball is now in the court of Air France, which finds itself in a delicate position, trying to navigate between security, diplomacy and customer service.
