Air conditioning in Egypt – everything is not like ours: ammo1 — LiveJournal

In Egypt, where summer temperatures rise above 40 degrees, air conditioning is a necessity. Everyone who can afford it installs air conditioners in their apartments, but this pleasure is not cheap.
A few facts regarding air conditioning in Egypt may surprise you.

In Russia, installation of an air conditioner is a separately paid service, and prices for air conditioners are almost always indicated without installation. In Egypt, all air conditioners are sold with installation and the price always includes it (even when the air conditioner is sold in a hardware store).

Almost all air conditioners sold in Russia have two modes – cooling and heating. Most air conditioners sold in Egypt can only cool. It is believed that heating is not needed, although in the winter months the temperature in many apartments drops to 19 degrees or lower, and, of course, there is no heating.

The power of air conditioners in Russia is measured in British thermal units (BTU), and most manufacturers use this power in model names (7, 9, 12, 18, etc. – these are thousands of BTUs). In Egypt, the power of air conditioners is indicated exclusively in horsepower (HP), while BTU values remain in the model names. So, 1.5 HP is 12000 BTU, 2.25 HP is 18000 BTU.

In Russia, air conditioners with a capacity of 7000 BTU (“sevens”) and 9000 BTU (“nines”) are popular. This power is quite enough for cooling and heating small rooms, but the Egyptians think differently: the minimum power is 1.5 HP, that is, 12000 BTU.

Because of this, air conditioners are significantly more expensive than in Russia.

As of today (January 2024), the cheapest air conditioner of the Egyptian brand Unionaire, with a power of 1.5 HP, capable of cooling only, costs 16,000 pounds (~28,000 rubles) with installation. The cheapest air conditioner with heating is 19,000 pounds (~34,000 rubles). Air conditioners of Chinese brands (Hair, Midea) – from 20,000 pounds (~36,000 rubles).

The cheapest inverter air conditioner from the Egyptian brand Fresh costs 23,400 pounds (~42,000 rubles), the same with a heating function costs 24,000 pounds (~43,000 rubles). Inverter Hair with heating and Wi-Fi control costs 25,000 pounds (~45,000 rubles).

Of course, there are also much more expensive models.

Very often, air conditioners are installed using the “slip-and-dash” technology. The routes are not always vacuumed during installation.

I note that air conditioners in Egypt are expensive not only to purchase, but also to operate – in the summer, the air conditioner becomes the main consumer of electricity in the apartment and electricity bills in the summer are several times higher than in the winter.

Peace for everyone!
