Air Canada Cancels Direct Flights to South from Quebec City: Operational Reasons and Shortage of Pilots

2023-08-18 19:27:38

Nearly a month before the arrival of fall, Air Canada is canceling all of its direct flights to the South departing from the Quebec City airport, for “operational” reasons.

The newspaper learned that the destinations affected are Cancun, starting October 23, in addition to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando in Florida and Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic. These direct links will therefore not be offered next winter.

Air Canada, however, plans to return the direct connection from Quebec to Cancun in the spring of 2024.

Departures to these sun destinations are still offered from the Quebec City airport, but now include stopovers in Toronto or Montreal.

Customers who purchased these direct flights to the South will be offered alternative flights to the same destination, but with a stopover, or a full refund.

Shortage of pilots

These cancellations are caused in particular by a “shortage of pilots on the regional markets”, as well as by “the persistent problems of the supply chain”, explains the spokesperson for Air Canada, Christophe Hennebelle, by email.

“Temporary adjustments”

“The carrier insisted on telling us that these are temporary adjustments and that these destinations would be served again as soon as possible,” said Quebec Airport spokesperson Etienne Cummings.

Other airlines, such as Air Transat and Sunwing, continue to offer direct flights from Quebec to sun destinations.
