ALGIERS- The national airline, Air Algérie, signed, Wednesday in Algiers, a contract with the American manufacturer Boeing for the acquisition of eight medium-carrier aircraft.
The contract was signed by the Director General of Air Algérie, Yacine Benslimane, and the Contract Manager for Boeing commercial aircraft, Laura Wolfe-Schutle, in the presence of representatives of the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, the Director General of the National Civil Aviation Agency, representatives of the Embassy of the United States of America in Algeria, as well as executives from the two companies.
This contract provides for Boeing to supply Air Algérie with eight type B 737-9 max aircraft (170-210 seat module), the first of which will be delivered in 2027.
At the end of the signing ceremony which took place at the Technopôle of Air Algérie located in Bachdjarah (east of the capital), Mr. Benslimane indicated that “this contract will contribute to the development of the Air Algeria”.
This is “a first contract which is part of the acquisition of a fleet of 15 aircraft”, he said, stressing that the first deliveries of these aircraft “will be made in 2027” .
These acquisitions are part of “Air Algerie’s fleet extension strategy through the purchase of new planes”, explained Mr. Benslimane.
In addition to this contract for 15 aircraft, Mr. Benslimane also recalled the future acquisition of other aircraft “in the form of Leasing”.
For her part, Mrs. Wolfe-Schutle said she was “delighted with the signing of this contract”, while indicating that she “appreciates the relationship and the business between Air Algérie and Boeing”, hoping that they “will last and develop further”.
It should be recalled that Air had announced, at the end of April, the provisional award of its contract relating to the acquisition of 15 new aircraft, to the aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus.
According to the provisional award notice, the market for medium-sized carriers was awarded to the American Boeing, while that for large carriers was awarded to the European Airbus. These results come in accordance with the procurement procedure of the company EPE/SPA Air Algérie, following consultation No. 01/AH-DG/2022, relating to the acquisition of 15 new aircraft.
Thus, Boeing will have to supply Air Algérie with 8 aircraft of type B 737-9 max (module 170-210 seats), while Airbus will supply the national company with 5 aircraft of type A 330-900 (module 280-320 seats) and 2 other type A 350-1000 (module 350-450 seats).
The acquisition of 15 new aircraft by Air Algérie was decided by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who had authorized, during the Council of Ministers held on May 8, 2022, the airline company Air Algérie to acquire 15 aircraft for the opening of new lines, in particular to African and Asian countries.
