Sevilla (Spain): German club Frankfurt won the Europa League football title following beating Scottish club Glasgow Rangers in a penalty shootout. The shootout was inevitable with a 1-1 draw in regulation and overtime.
This is Frankfurt’s first title since the Europa League. 100,000 Rangers and 60,000 Frankfurt’s arrived in Sevilla. Undaunted by the excitement of the crowd, Rangers and Frankfurt put out a standing ovation. Frankfurt created more chances in the first half. But the goal did not fall in the first half. The first goal was scored in the 57th minute. An unexpected opportunity for the Rangers was netted by Nigerian Joe Iodele Aribo with a superb finish. 12 minutes later the German team hit back. The ball was deflected by Rafael Bore into the net following it had been deflected into the net by a Costa Rican defender from the left wing.
The match went into extra time as neither team was able to score more goals. Not many opportunities were born there either. Frankfurt created great chances in the second half. Still the goal did not come. In the 118th minute, Moore’s chance was sealed by Kent, but goalkeeper Kevin Trap saved Frankfurt with an amazing save. 120 minutes later a penalty shootout was called. Both teams scored the first three penalties. James Tavaneer, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield scored for the Rangers, while Christopher Lens, Ajdin Herstick and Daichi Kamada scored for Aintrash. Aaron Ramsey missed the Rangers’ fourth kick. Ramsey’s kick easily blocked the trap. Costic and Kemar Roof then scored. Frankfurt won the Europa League title without a penalty for Borreo. Bore became the hero of Frankfurt, scoring the equalizer and taking the decisive kick in the shootout. This is the first time since 1980 that a European trophy has come to Frankfurt.
