In AIK’s eyes, Djurgården lost in the derby.
– They go on and hype up the audience all the time. It doesn’t work. Djurgården has good players, just not when they meet AIK, says Mads Thychosen and laughs after 2-0 in the derby.
Everyone interested in Allsvenskan knows AIK’s great strength: the right wing. With the flying Rui Modesto as wingback/winger and Mads Thychosen as overlapping “right centre-back”, AIK often create their dangerous attacks from that side.
– We know how strong Rui is. He has been all season. We have a big advantage there. And then Anton Salétros comes there and provides support as well, says Thychosen and continues:
– It worked perfectly today too! We were better for 90 minutes.
“Always like this towards Djurgården…”
Yes, Djurgården’s isolated left-back Viktor Bergh found it very difficult to handle AIK’s overload. The gnat fought the balls down or created dangerous set pieces.
Were you surprised they couldn’t stop you when that strength is so apparent?
– No, not at all. It’s always like this against Djurgården, if I’m being completely honest. I don’t know if they think of something else when they meet us? They go on and hype the audience all the time but it doesn’t work. We had our thoughts on the match and celebrated afterwards instead.
Is it a mental issue for Djurgården? After all, they are higher in the table.
– At some point, you have to establish that it is so. Because I know several of the players. I’ve met them and played with a few. They are good footballers… just not against AIK. And it’s perfect! he says with a smile.
Thychosen: “Became too much for Djurgården”
How do you feel about all the fights during the match?
– We kept our heads calm. We came out stronger (after every fight). But if they want to mess with us, that’s fine. That’s how it is to play the derby. There is always a fight. But it was probably a little too much for Djurgården. It ruined their rhythm. Perfect for us.
AIK has had a strong start under new coach Mikkkjal Thomassen. Now Thychosen believes in a nice autumn.
– Three points here was huge for us. Now we look up the table and go hunting!
Berntsen pays tribute to the team
He is very pleased with how solid AIK have become after the introduction of a keener pressing game and the flexible 5-3-2 formation.
– It’s three straight games where the opponents don’t create much at all. It feels solid now.
Sporting director Thomas Berntsen, who had a tough season, breathed his last afterwards.
– We enjoyed the performance. How compact we were in the game, the intensity and the duels. We win fully deserved today and we make sure that the top team Djurgården looks like a middle team.
AIK’s goals were scored by Bersant Celina and Rui Modesto in the sometimes very messy derby.
