The implementation of an energy cost subsidy for all non-profit organizations, as promised by the federal government, is particularly important to the aid organization.

Vienna (OTS) The Aid organization Austria evaluates the talks at a summit on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, with Federal Chancellor Nehammer, Vice-Chancellor Kogler, Minister for Social Affairs Rauch, State Secretary Plakolm and State Secretary Mayer positively. “The exchange was very constructive. Comprehensive measures to strengthen the non-profit sector were discussed. Now it’s a matter of implementation,” he says Elisabeth AnselmManaging Director of the Austrian Aid Agency.

Representatives of non-profit associations and voluntary organizations were invited to the summit in the Federal Chancellery. The main focus of the talks was on the following agendas:

  • Extension of the deductibility of donations to all charitable purposes
  • Strengthening of volunteer work, in particular expansion of the voluntary social year and equivalent framework conditions as in community service
  • Energy cost subsidy for all non-profit organizations

Compensation for increased energy costs ensures supply with social services

“The implementation of the energy cost subsidy for all non-profit organizations is particularly important to us,” explains Anselm. All too often it is overlooked that non-profit organizations are crucial for providing the population with services of general interest, such as childcare or nursing. “In the area of outpatient care with care and support services, i.e. with mobile services such as home nursing and home help, almost one hundred percent of the providers in the non-profit sector are at home,” says Anselm. The increased fuel prices would cause massive problems here. Energy costs, for example in the form of heating costs, also have an enormous impact in nursing homes and other inpatient care facilities. Instruments designed to offset increased energy costs for businesses and entrepreneurial organizations did not include all non-profit organizations.

“Non-profit organizations such as the relief organization have been shouldering these additional costs themselves since 2022, but we are slowly running out of breath,” explains Anselm. The aid organization is all the more positive regarding the announcement by the federal government that it will develop an NPO energy cost subsidy in the next few weeks in order to cushion additional costs from this title for all non-profit organizations, including those who are not entrepreneurs. “The preparation of the announced NPO energy cost subsidy must now happen quickly and the implementation must be as practicable as possible so that the supply of the population with social services is also secured in the long term,” Anselm concludes.
