What rules should apply to artificial intelligence (AI) in the European Union so that abuse is prevented and fears are allayed? The AI Act is dedicated to this question, on which the EU Parliament adopted its position on Wednesday and the final version of which should be finalized by the end of 2023. And while the current version gets a lot of support from observers, there’s also a lot of criticism. It is criticized that rules that are too strict might harm the business location and, above all, mean an end for AI software with open source licenses. The criticism was and is even louder when it comes to fundamental rights and data protection: The question of whether the real-time evaluation of biometric data – i.e. live face recognition – should be banned in public spaces was eagerly debated.
