AI-Powered Speed Cameras in England: Revolutionizing Road Safety with Artificial Intelligence

2023-09-03 20:24:28

England is currently testing a rather special radar. Boosted with artificial intelligence, it works hand in hand with the authorities to punish all infractions. And it works.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not just ChatGPT. The police in Cornwall, in the south of England, have just begun a trial period with a new type of speed camera. AI-powered security cameras wreak havoc. 300 drivers penalized in the space of three days. Over a thousand following a week.

Installed along a main road, the radar lets nothing pass. Produced by the Australian company Acusensus, the system has also been tested since 2022 in certain regions of the country.

Semi-automated

Without going into technical details, just know that it is almost impossible to escape the vigilance of these cameras. Simply put, the radar examines traffic and records images of vehicles that enter its field of view. The whole being of a relatively high quality thanks to a high shutter speed and the various filter lenses.

Once the images have been recorded, it is the turn of artificial intelligence to intervene. The AI scans the data, flags drivers who commit an offense and transfers the images. Last step, officers check the offenses identified by the system and act accordingly to sanction the driver.

AI is making its way into surveillance

What should be remembered from all this is that artificial intelligence is carving out an increasingly important place in the field of surveillance. As reminded Business Insider, the United Kingdom is also a precursor of the genre. Since May 2023, the country has been installing AI-powered cameras along highways to spot drivers throwing trash out of windows.

In the same vein, we can also mention the metros of Barcelona and New York which use this type of camera to spot fraudsters. Not to mention the project of our French neighbor, who wants to introduce facial recognition on his surveillance cameras for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Clearly, the integration of AI into security systems has not finished spilling ink. Mainly for ethical reasons. That being said, in terms of road safety, this advance might well save a few lives by forcing drivers to be more attentive.
