The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) said that artificial intelligence (AI) technology is one of the most significant technological trends and has brought major changes in various sectors, including law enforcement, one of which is in handling narcotics crimes.
In a webinar in Jakarta, Thursday (10/10), Head of BNN Komjen Pol Marthinus Hukom assessed that artificial intelligence technology was able to increase efficiency in monitoring, detecting and preventing the increasingly complex circulation of narcotics.
“It is important to understand and utilize AI productively and positively,” said Marthinus in a statement confirmed in Jakarta, reported by Antara, Saturday (12/10).

Marthinus believes that one of the most prominent applications of artificial intelligence is in data analysis. By using machine learning algorithms, authorities can analyze narcotics distribution patterns and identify various vulnerable points that are centers of distribution.
Apart from that, he continued, artificial intelligence is able to process suspicious financial and communication transaction data, making it easier to track drug trafficking networks.
However, he said there were also challenges in using artificial intelligence in law enforcement, where privacy issues and the potential for misuse of the technology were major concerns.

Therefore, he considers it important for every family that implements artificial intelligence to comply with applicable ethical and legal principles.
On the other hand, the Head of BNN emphasized the importance of preparing to anticipate and mitigate the negative impacts of the development of artificial intelligence technology.
The reason, he said, is that the world is developing very quickly and tends to be unpredictable. In the midst of dynamic developments in science and technology, there are implications for the complexity of narcotics problems.

He also estimates that technological developments will give rise to various new forms of narcotics crimes with increasingly sophisticated methods, which will make detection by officers more difficult.
“It is not impossible that information and knowledge about drugs or addictive substances will be manipulated by narcotics syndicates to form new truths according to their dark business agenda,” he said.
Nevertheless, Marthinus said that although artificial intelligence is only a tool, the way the technology is used will greatly determine its long-term impact on society.

With a wise and responsible approach, he continued, artificial intelligence has great potential to provide significant benefits for efforts to eradicate narcotics crime in Indonesia.
The webinar entitled Future Life with Artificial Intelligence is one of BNN’s efforts to deal with the development of robotic technology, where the decision-making capabilities of artificial intelligence systems are as confident as human thinking patterns.
The event was attended by approximately 500 participants, who came from the Central BNN, Provincial BNN, Regency/City BNN, as well as BNN Rehabilitation Centers/Lokas throughout Indonesia. (I-2)
