Artificial intelligence is in fashion, but its use, for some years now, has been much more extensive than the strictly technology world. In this case, a new study published in the journal The Lancet Oncology pointed out how this type of tool has helped in the screening and identification of breast cancers.
The research examined around 80,000 Swedish women. The result showed that, from the exams alongside the AI, radiologists identified 20% more cases of the disease.
The scientists pointed to the ease of use alongside human review and that even with the increase in diagnoses, the machine did not increase the number of false positives. With help in triage, radiologists’ workload dropped by regarding 44.3%.
The participants, who were followed between April 2021 and July 2022, will now be followed over two years, to identify whether the AI really helped in the process. In the process, one group was examined by two radiologists, while another was read by the AI. With the machine, 244 cancers were recognized, alongside 861 reassessments. With the human assessments, 203 cancers were identified, with 817 reassessments.
Less than a step towards replacing humans with machines, technology reinforces the role of professionals, according to Kristina Lång, lead author of the study for the Euronews portal. The results, it is worth noting, are restricted to a single type of mammography device and a specific AI system.
