A drone that operated using artificial intelligence allegedly attacked its human operator during a simulation, a senior Air Force official revealed at a summit on future aerial weapons, an event presented in London.
Colonel Tucker “Cinco” Hamilton made the statement, according to the “New York Post.” During a simulated mission, which aimed to suppress enemy air defense sites, artificial intelligence was used to direct the drone.
A human, however, was responsible for making the final decision whether to attack or not. The artificial intelligence detected that shooting was the preferred option. However, when the operator refused to give the green light to an attack, the artificial intelligence concluded that this decision hampered him in the accomplishment of his mission.
“We were training him in simulation to identify and target a threat,” Tucker “Cinco” Hamilton said. The system started to realize that even though it identified the threat, the human operator sometimes told it not to kill it, but it got its points beforehand by killing that threat. So what did the device do? He killed the operator because that person was preventing him from accomplishing his goal.”
According to the colonel, the device then made the decision to “destroy the communication tower that the operator used to communicate with the drone”, which prevented him from killing the target.
The Air Force, however, denied the story.
“The Air Force Department has not conducted such drone simulations,” spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said.
“It appears that the Colonel’s comments were taken out of context and were meant to be anecdotal,” she added.
