Thiruvananthapuram: Transport Minister Antony Raju has said that fines will be levied from June 5 for violations detected by AI cameras in the state. Earlier it was announced that the fine would be levied from May 20, but it was extended once more. The decision was taken in a high-level meeting called by the Transport Minister.

The minister said that till the decision of the central government, there will be no penalty for traveling with a child below 12 years of age on a two-wheeler. A letter has been sent to the Center stating that an amendment is required in this regard. The minister informed that the decision was taken in consideration of public sentiment.

The Motor Vehicle Department has started sending awareness notices from May 5 pointing out violations of the law. It will be available only till June 4. After this, penalty notices will be sent. Penalty will be imposed following preliminary inspection at official level.

Out of a total of 726 cameras, 675 have been installed to detect violations such as helmets and seat belts. Most of the violations fall under this category. There are 25 cameras to detect illegal parking. There are four speeding cameras and 18 cameras to detect lane departures and traffic signal violations. The missions of AI cameras are surveillance and evidence gathering.

If the violation is caught by the camera, the vehicle owner will receive a fine message on his mobile phone. E-mail will be sent by post within a week. If the fine is not paid within 30 days, the Motor Vehicle Department will issue a notice and take further action.
