The Belgian-Dutch supermarket group Ahold Delhaize had a solid second quarter, according to its quarterly results published on Wednesday. In total, the group’s sales reached 22.1 billion euros. Strikes at Delhaize stores in Belgium impacted group sales by 0.7 percentage points.

At constant exchange rates, the group recorded sales growth of 4.3%. The retailer was able to increase its adjusted operating profit by 2.8% (4.4% constant exchange rate) to 904 million euros.

In Europe, sales reached 8.4 billion euros, up 7.4% (7% at constant exchange rates). On a comparable basis, sales increased by 6.3%. Excluding the impact of the strikes in Belgium, sales on a comparable basis increased by 7.6%.

The group reiterates its support for the franchise of the 128 supermarkets still integrated into the Delhaize group “in order to allow the brand to better serve customers over the long term”.

In the United States, Ahold Delhaize achieved sales of 13.6 billion euros, up 0.3% or 2.7% at constant exchange rates. On a comparable basis and excluding fuel sales, sales increased by 3.6%.

“The agility and flexibility demonstrated by our brands and associates, adapting quickly to customer needs while diligently staying on course with our various transformation projects, has underpinned the company’s strong performance over the past quarter”, underlines the CEO of the group Frans Muller. The latter also believes that the “peak of inflation” has passed. The group also points to its good performance in online sales via sites like Bol.
