On the 15th, the first day of the official election campaign for the presidential election, two people died and one collapsed from carbon monoxide poisoning in Ahn Cheol-soo, the presidential candidate of the People’s Party, from carbon monoxide poisoning. As a result, Candidate Ahn immediately halted the election campaign.
Choi Jin-seok, chairman of the People’s Party Standing Election Task Force, held an emergency briefing at the party camp conference room at 9 pm on the same day and said, “I feel a great sense of responsibility because something that shouldn’t have happened. We wish the deceased well with our sincere condolences to those who passed away.”
According to the People’s Party and the police, bus driver A and Party member B were found collapsed in Ahn’s car parked in front of Shinsegae Department Store in Sinsegae-dong, Cheonan-si, Chungcheongnam-do at around 5:20 pm on the same day, and they were taken to the hospital, but died. At the same time, the driver of a car for a campaign in Gangwon Province also collapsed and is being hospitalized in the emergency room. He has a pulse, but is said to be unconscious.
The People’s Party believes that carbon monoxide was emitted from a vehicle that was modified to be able to play a video logo song by installing a light emitting diode (LED) signboard. Chairman Choi said, “If you turn on the LED signage through the generator, carbon monoxide is generated and you have to open the door to drive. Currently, there are a total of 18 campaign vehicles that the People’s Party has converted and operated.
When the accident occurred, Candidate Ahn stopped all campaigning schedules and moved to the Cheonan Regional Hospital where the deceased was located. The People’s Party said, “The current election committee has decided to completely suspend the election campaign of all campaign members, including candidates, and do our best to manage the situation.”
Meanwhile, on the news of the accident, competitors sent messages of consolation. Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung said on his Twitter on the same day, “It’s really unfortunate. We pray for the well-being of those who died in an unexpected accident.” Yoon Seok-yeol, head of the election campaign head of the People’s Strength Presidential Candidate Camp, Kwon Young-se, also said, “I pray for the well-being of the deceased and wish for a speedy recovery for those who are undergoing treatment.”
