The Palestinian Ahed Tamimi, 22, an icon of the Palestinian cause, was arrested in the occupied West Bank for “inciting terrorism,” a military spokesman said Monday.
“Ahed Tamimi, suspected of inciting violence and terrorist activities, was detained in Nabi Saleh,” her hometown in the northern West Bank, a Palestinian territory occupied since 1967 by Israel, the spokesperson said.
“Tamimi was transferred to Israeli security forces for interrogation,” he added.
The activist was arrested during an Israeli army raid “aimed at detaining individuals suspected of participating in terrorist activities and inciting hatred” in the northern West Bank, the same source said.
The activist’s mother denied that her daughter wrote that message. “She is accused of having posted a message inciting violence, but Ahed did not write it,” said Narimane Tamimi.
“There are dozens of accounts with Ahed’s photo, with her photo, but with which she has no link. When Ahed tries to open an account on social networks, she is immediately blocked,” he added.
Narimane added that her husband, Bassem al Tamimi, was detained on October 20 while returning from a trip and since then his family has “no news” of him.
The images of this Palestinian with curly hair and penetrating eyes, who is now 22 years old, have been going around the world for a long time.
Ahed Tamimi became famous at the age of 14 when she was filmed biting an Israeli soldier to prevent him from arresting her younger brother.
In December 2017, at the age of 16, he slapped an Israeli soldier in the yard of his house.
On December 19, 2017, she was detained by the military and later sentenced to eight months in prison. Tamimi was released on July 29, 2018.
Since then she became a global icon of the Palestinian cause and is considered by Palestinians as an example of courage in the face of Israeli repression in the occupied territories.
A giant portrait of Tamimi was painted near Bethlehem on the separation wall built by the Israelis in the West Bank.
His family home in Nabi Saleh, in the northern occupied West Bank, became a meeting point for Palestinian and foreign activists fighting once morest the Israeli occupation.
