Game news Ahead of the release of Bayonetta 3, PlatinumGames reflects on the absolute failure that is Babylon’s Fall
This October, PlatinumGames should return with the long-awaited Bayonetta 3. But before this return, the Japanese studio was already present on the video game scene in 2022 with Babylon’s Fall, a service game that completely missed its publication. The CEO of the studio returned to this huge failure.
A big flop
Babylon’s Fall didn’t appeal to players, and that’s almost an understatement. The PlatinumGames software is undoubtedly the biggest failure of the year on the side of the video game scene. After a disastrous launchthe title published by Square Enix quickly sank into oblivion, so much so that the physical editions ended up being destroyed by the resellers, for lack of demand.
Due to a lack of demand and therefore of players on the servers, PlatinumGames is forced to shorten the suffering of its game. Thus, the servers will officially close in early 2023. Far from being defeatist, however, Atsushi Inaba, CEO of PlatinumGames, returned to the complete failure of his teams during an interview with VGC. During the interview, the person concerned apologizes to the players and nevertheless claims to have learned from this dirty experience rich lessons.

Aware of the harm that his teams and himself may have caused their fans, Atsushi Inaba first wanted to apologize to them. Nevertheless, the CEO admits that this failure cannot be entirely the responsibility of the studio and asks to refer to Square Enix to understand “the reasons or the process that led to the game as it is”.
The first important thing I want to point out is that we are not able to comment on certain aspects of our games developed with our partners and this is one of the reasons why we do not really appreciate our current situation which limits us to the development of games(…) The only thing we can react to is Babylon’s Fall’s end of service, an unfortunate conclusion that has no doubt caused disappointment, even anger among our dedicated fans and players. The disappointment that we may have caused is something for which we are sincerely sorry (…) To convey a feeling quite other than joy and fun through our creations is not something that makes us proud as developers.
Go ahead and continue the games-service
Despite this statement, the CEO wants to be confident and wants to make the most of this failure. According to the interested party, the studio should still rely on service games in the future.
We learned a lot from that experience, and it didn’t change our plans or alter our desire to pursue service games in the future. We absolutely want to continue making service games and continue our efforts to move forward.
Given the Babylon’s Fall disaster, it’s hard to be optimistic regarding seeing a new game-service from PlatinumGames. Anyway, we will have to wait before having news from the studio following the release of Bayonetta 3, scheduled for October 28 on Nintendo Switch.
