The Israeli military deployed additional forces in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday (16/10) ahead of the week-long Jewish holiday.
A military statement said the new troop reduction was made after a new review of the security situation ahead of the Sukkot holiday which begins on Wednesday evening.

According to data from the Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now, there are half a million illegal settlers in 146 settlements and 224 outposts in the West Bank.

Tensions have continued to rise in the West Bank since Israel’s brutal assault on the Gaza Strip which killed more than 42,400 people, mostly women and children, following a Hamas attack in October last year.

At least 756 Palestinians in the West Bank have been killed and more than 6,250 injured by Israeli army fire in the occupied territory, according to the Health Ministry.

This escalation follows a landmark ruling last July by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) which declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land illegal and demanded the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. (Ant/Z-2)
