US basketball star Stephen Curry threw his support behind Kamala Harris’s bid for US president on Thursday (25/7) ahead of the opening of the 2024 Paris Olympics. He believes the US competing in the multi-sports tournament can help unite the country ahead of the increasingly heated US presidential election.
The four-time NBA champion and Olympic debutant, who is returning to the national team for the first time in a decade, spoke warmly of Harris, the former California senator who was born in Oakland and is a longtime Golden State Warriors supporter.
“The fact that President Biden has endorsed me, Vice President Harris is ready to bring her energy to this campaign and, hopefully, if she’s on the ticket, win the election. That’s a big deal,” he said.
Harris, who visited Curry and his team at their training camp in Las Vegas earlier this month, has developed a friendly relationship with the Warriors star over the years, largely due to their deep connections in San Francisco and aligned political views.
“He’s our supporter, so I want to give that energy back to him. We’re representing our country here, and it’s been a monumental couple of months,” Curry said.
“Hopefully, this is a great way to do our part in continuing to unite our country in the way that sports brings people together. For him, at this point, knowing what’s coming, it’s all about positive energy and optimism, knowing how divided our country is right now.”
Curry helped the United States win the FIBA World Championship in 2010 and 2014. The 36-year-old will make his long-awaited Olympic debut on Sunday when the Americans open their campaign against a Serbia team led by three-time NBA MVP Nikola Joki. (Theguardian/P-5)
