From autumn 2022, the agricultural cooperative society Fenaco will offer CO certificates2 thanks to new methane-inhibiting mineral feedstuffs.
In May 2021, UFA, the daughter company of Fenaco (agricultural cooperative society), launched the first mineral feed for dairy cows. After scientific trials and field tests, it turns out that “this mixture of valuable plant extracts improves the digestion of dairy cows and thus reduces methane emissions by around 10%,” Fenaco announced on Tuesday.
In total, the reduction potential for dairy cows in Switzerland is several hundred thousand tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, continues the agricultural cooperative society in its Press release. “Our new mineral feed is meeting with wide acceptance. Many agricultural companies throughout Switzerland are already using it”, explains Paul Steiner, President of the Management Board of UFA.
The validation of the UFA Swiss Climate Feed climate protection program will allow Fenaco to offer CO₂ certificates from autumn 2022. These are designed as an instrument “serving to offset emissions that cannot be avoided by other reduction measures. By distributing mineral fodder to their dairy cows, farmers are at the beginning of the chain of exchange for compensation through CO₂ certificates. “The methane reduction thus achieved in the digestion process can be quantified and transformed into certificates which can then be sold or purchased,” explains Fenaco.
These certificates “will only be available following confirmation of the reductions in emissions within the framework of a monitoring carried out by an independent control body”, further specifies the agricultural cooperative society which already provides certificates for several thousand tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. “If the certificates are well accepted in the market, UFA plans to fortify other forage foods under the USCF climate protection program as early as the end of 2022,” concludes Fenaco.
“As part of its innovation competition, Suisse Tier, the main fair dedicated to the keeping of livestock in Switzerland, has rewarded this product with the distinction for the new products 2021 in the branch”, announces Fenaco in its press release. Press. In the first quarter of 2022, the Technische Überwachungsverein (TÜV) (note: the TÜV are German organizations working on the certification of products of all types to protect the environment and human health) validated the certification process for Fenaco climate certificates with the support of a consulting firm
