• It makes it possible to produce quality fodder
• While offering the possibility of growing edible mushrooms
• Burkinabè people were trained in its implementation
L’Agriculture occupies an important place in the lives of the Burkinabè. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INSD), agricultural activities occupy 81% of the Burkinabe population and contribute enormously to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Better, according to the INSD, agricultural production saw an increase of 4% in 2020. Despite this picture, Burkinabè, with the security situation in the country, need the benefits of this key sector even more.
As a solution to this, different governments have made agricultural production their priority and promoted cultivation techniques. China, Burkina Faso’s partner for several years now, is also making its contribution in the fight for food self-sufficiency. During the day of October 22, 2024, the Embassy of the Land of the Rising Sun, in Ouagadougou, organized training on Juncao technology.
Juncao technology, invented by Chinese researcher Lin Zhanzheng, is an agricultural technique that uses grass instead of wood to cultivate edible mushrooms. “It is characterized by low investment costs, rapid profitability and high economic and ecological benefits. This project responds to the common concerns of developing countries, which concern the elimination of poverty, the reduction of hunger, the use of renewable energies, the promotion of employment and the fight against climate change,” indicated Lin Hui, Director of Juncao Training Center.
Initiated by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and carried out by the Fujian University of Agriculture and Forestry, the training aims to inject strong momentum into sustainable development in the fields of agriculture and other sectors in Burkina Faso, thanks to the transmission of technologies and in-depth exchanges. According to Chinese experts, Juncao technology could play a positive role in eliminating poverty, creating jobs and increasing incomes in developing countries. In addition, it encompasses many areas such as the development of livestock breeding with grass instead of cereals and the production of fiberboard and paper pulp with grass instead of wood, as well as the management of ecology. The introduction and popularization of the technique will contribute, according to Chinese experts, to the development of agriculture and livestock breeding in Burkina Faso, which is full of enormous natural resources.
Juncao technology is a contribution from China, after the two specialized missions which stayed in Burkina Faso. These missions, according to the Chinese Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Lu Shan, worked with Burkinabè experts to improve the production of millet and rice. These steps resulted, in June 2024, in the adoption by the country of Upright Men of three varieties of Chinese hybrid rice. For the diplomat, his country has also invited several agricultural stakeholders to seminars in China.
For the Minister Delegate in charge of animal resources, Amadou Dicko, Juncao technology represents an exceptional opportunity for players in the agropastoral and fisheries sector in our country. “This technology makes it possible to produce quality fodder in sufficient quantity, while offering the possibility of growing edible mushrooms, thus creating diversified and sustainable sources of income for vulnerable households. It combines tradition and innovation, helping to make our agriculture more resilient and to promote our local resources,” indicated the Minister Delegate. Amadou Dicko also expressed the hope that these new skills could improve the productivity and profitability of farms. During the training, participants were treated to sharing experiences and results of the application of Juncao technology around the world.

Lhe Juncao is a kind of tall herbaceous plants that can be used in champion cultivation. After years of breeding and innovation, its function has expanded to animal feed, fertilizer and ecological management. Thanks to its low cost and rapid effect, Juncao technology is appreciated by African countries, within the framework of the “Belt and Road” initiative. The plant is currently cultivated in South Africa, Rwanda, Nigeria, Tanzania, Lesotho and other African countries.
