LState and non-state actors, technical, financial and humanitarian partners from the rural world met on Monday, January 30, 2023, at the second ordinary session of the Board of Directors of the ministerial sector of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Resources and fisheries for the year 2022.

The participants of this meeting wanted to lay the foundations to best meet the challenges in their field, during the year 2023, through the theme: “Sustainable increase in agro-pastoral production through the development of irrigated production: challenges and outlook”. “Interventions in the agriculture, animal and fishery resources sector will now have to contribute not only to irrigated cereal production, to improving the coverage of the livestock’s water needs, but also to the creation of added value to our agro-pastoral and halieutic products”, recalled the minister in charge of agriculture, Dénis Ouédraogo, before the start of the works.

All the actors who work tirelessly to meet the challenges of food security and poverty in rural areas want to be there for the year 2023.

During the year 2022 and in terms of sustainable development of production and agro-sylvo-pastoral and halieutic productivity, we can note a few achievements: 2,200 ha of new lowlands developed; 946 units of agricultural equipment acquired and made available at subsidized prices; 3,266 irrigation equipment made available to producers; 7,701,903 heads of poultry vaccinated once morest New Castle disease; 1,207 agricultural farmers graduated from Agricultural Vocational Training Centers (CFPA).

Three structuring investments have made good progress, in particular: construction work on the Veterinary Medicines Purchasing Center (CAMVET) which are at an achievement rate of 95%; the design of the rice farming model supported by private promoters, including the technical, economic and financial feasibility study carried out and approved within the ministry and the Koupéla fertilizer mixing unit 90% complete.

The response and support plan for vulnerable populations drawn up following the agro-pastoral campaign in the amount of 237,780,285,450 CFA francs was implemented to the tune of 171,750,217,195 CFA francs, i.e. a rate of financial realization of 72.29% as of December 31, 2022. Thus allowing 5,374,301 vulnerable people to have access to sufficient and quality food. The department’s actions, combined with the efforts of our partners and the commitment of our brave producers, have made it possible to achieve, in 2022, a forecast cereal production of more than 4 million 915 thousand tonnes, representing an increase of approximately 5.5% compared to the 2021/2022 agricultural campaign. To do this, I would like to reiterate my gratitude and my encouragement to the populations of the rural world for their resilience, despite the persistence of hazards of all kinds.

Increase production

For the upcoming 2023 campaign, all the players in the rural world have agreed on the production objectives to be achieved. This will involve producing approximately 5.6 million tonnes of cereals, an increase of 13.8% compared to the forecast production for the 2022/2023 campaign; 1.8 million tonnes of cash crops, i.e. an increase of 14.8% compared to the forecast production for the 2022/2023 agricultural campaign; 1.1 million tonnes of products from other food crops, i.e. an increase of 21% compared to the forecast production for the 2022/2023 agricultural campaign; 10.1 million head of cattle, an increase of 2.05% compared to 2022; 22.3 million head of small ruminants (sheep and goats), an increase of 0.85% compared to 2022; 36.8 million head of poultry, an increase of 1.2% compared to 2022; 33 thousand tonnes of fish, an increase of 3% compared to 2022.o
