Agricultural exports | Exotic fruits of Peru and their potential for the export of pulps and nectars | fruits of the peruvian jungle | ECONOMY

In the first place, it must be taken into account that Peru needs a different offer than other countries because it cannot compete with giants such as India, whose greater industrialization allows it to offer much larger volumes and at a lower price in the international market, he points out. Carlos Posadaexecutive director of the Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (Idexcam).

On the other hand, he adds, jungle fruits have interesting potential, but producers in eastern Peru need greater industrialization to process fruit and offer it as pulp, nectar or juice, in significant volumes.

“The markets are looking for something different and the fruits of the forest are innovative in their texture and flavor, they also have a high vitamin content”said Posada to Management.

A different Peruvian offer of pulps and nectars

In this sense, he pointed out that aguaje (high in vitamin A) and camo camo (rich in antioxidants) would be two of the fruits that might have an important reception, particularly in Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, Singapore and Thailand, where it is quite hot and there is a high demand for fruit drinks. Other important destinations would be Mexico and Central American countries.

In this regard, Posada pointed out that it is necessary to provide technical assistance to a large number of producers in the jungle and encourage associativity between them, which implies a job that will still take years. Once production capacity is increased, work will have to be done to promote these products in the international market.

An example of the potential of exotic fruits provides it Bully Products, which currently sells pulp and nectars of remove remove (also known as naranjilla), cocona and blackberry, among others.

Its general manager, Jean Carlos Guzmán, He told Gestión that last year his exports were around S/50 thousand and they came mainly to Switzerland. He added that the sale of pulp offers a 30% return.

The business began in 2013 and began to add value to its fruits with technical assistance from Oxapampa Agroindustrial CITEwhich is part of the Technological Institute of Production (ITP). “Now we hope to increase our production capacity to increase exports because we see that there is an attractive market for exotic fruits”he commented.

It should be noted that Peruvian exports of passion fruit in pulp amounted to US$7 million, and in nectars to US$278,000 in 2022, reported the Association of Exporters (ADEX). The main destinations for the pulps were Chile, the United States, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands and Argentina.

About, Fabian Hidalgo, general manager of Agromar, points out that this year there might be an interesting increase in these exports. “This type of business is usually cyclical. This year there is a certain shortage of passion fruit and mango in the international market, so it is likely that the demand for pulp from these fruits will increase because there will be better prices, but it would only be for this year, something temporary”, he told Management.

After having bought Lindley’s fruit pulp production plant in Huacho, at the beginning of 2022, Agromar absorbed the market share occupied by said company. Now this line of products represents 20% of Agromar’s sales.
