The agreement in principle was given by the Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni, and the Mauritanian Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism, Lemrabott Ould Bennahi at the ministry’s headquarters in Nouakchott, where the two ministers co-chaired a working session, in the presence of executives from the two ministries and the Economic Advisor at the Algerian Embassy in Nouakchott, Youcef Abbou and the president of the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA), Kamel Moula.

Recalling that the volume of trade between the two countries does not exceed 200 million USD, the minister estimated that this figure “does not live up to the aspirations of the two peoples, nor to bilateral political relations.”

In this context, Mr. Zitouni highlighted the “important” projects carried out as part of the promotion of bilateral commercial relations, to cite only the trans-Saharan and the Algiers-Nouakchott maritime line, noting the need to iron out the difficulties hindering trade and supporting economic operators from both countries.

For his part, the Mauritanian minister welcomed the determination of private Algerian operators to access the Mauritanian market, affirming that his department “will work to develop the volume of commercial exchange between the two countries.”

The inauguration of the Algerian Union Bank will promote bilateral economic relations, he added.

Remember that the first Algerian bank opened abroad, namely “Algerian Union Bank” was inaugurated this Wednesday in Nouakchott.
