Better recognize and better protect healthcare professionals is at the heart of the Government’s priorities and the roadmap of the Ministry of Health and Prevention. A mission was launched on this subject by Agnès Le Bodoat the request of François Braun, last January, with the broad involvement of stakeholders and representatives of health professionals.
The health of caregivers is a major public health concern. Although this problem is not new, the health crisis linked to the Covid-19 pandemic has revealed to the general public the particular risks associated with these professions. Healthcare professionals tend to put the health of their patients first. But, to take good care of others, you have to learn to take care of yourself.
Agnès Firmin Le Bodo launched on March 30 a major national project dedicated to the health of health professionals, involving all the stakeholders.
The questionnaire co-constructed with the federations (FHF – FHP – Nexem – FEHAP – The Red Cross, etc.), representatives of health professionals (UNPS – the Liberals) and Orders, as well as the association of care directors , the MNH foundation and qualified personalities, has made it possible to initiate a collective dynamic since nearly 50,000 health professionals from the fields of health, social and medico-social, institutional and liberal, participated. This mobilization testifies to the attention of health professionals for this subject. Several major trends emerge from this sample.
Some key figures from the responses of health professionals who participated in this consultation
- 63% believe that their state of health is not good (including “very bad”, “bad” and “fairly good”);
- 53% give a mark lower than 7/10 concerning their current life;
- 71% estimate the level of stress related to the professional activity higher than 6/10;
- 77% feel they don’t get enough sleep;
- 64% assess their state of fatigue less than or equal to 5/10;
- 14% say they have no attending physician;
- Only 11% of health professionals with access to it believe that their last consultation with occupational medicine had a positive impact.
To promote the health of health professionals, it is necessary to adopt a global approach: from prevention to care, and this by integrating the youngest among them in the process, right from health studies.
The Minister specified today during the SantExpo exhibition the areas of work more particularly followed.
- Awareness and training: implementation of awareness-raising actions as well as information and training programs to support health professionals, staff representatives and management in stress management, health promotion and risk prevention psychosocial;
- Improved working environment: promote the conditions of a healthy and safe working environment for health professionals, by implementing policies for the prevention of psychosocial risks and by supporting and encouraging establishments and teams to improve working methods, particularly in terms of organization of working time and recognition of time worked;
- Prevention and access to care: evolution of systems in order to facilitate access to prevention systems and care for health professionals (health checks, access to occupational medicine for liberals, consultation hours adapted to the schedule of health professionals …), commitment to reflection on the use of self-medication, psychological assistance, via dedicated centres, a telephone line and an online platform with resources to provide psychological and emotional support to caregivers;
- Research : investment in research on the health of health professionals is a major challenge, in order to improve our collective understanding of the causes and effects of mental and physical health problems related to their professional activity, but also from the first years of training (studies, internship, etc.). The results of the upcoming DREES survey on the mental health of health professionals will be valuable. Their lessons will support the choices, the priorities of the actions to be carried out.
- Solidarity and brotherhood: reflection on the extension of the principle of “assistance in adversity” to health professionals, with regard to their health, with the aim of peer-help.
The Minister will present, at the end of June, the first measures of the shared and multi-annual roadmap aimed at preserving, promoting and improving the health of healthcare professionals. Furthermore, in the next few days it will seek the assistance of the ARS for this national project, in particular the production of an inventory of the actions currently in place or by appointing a correspondent in each ARS.
“Taking care of the health of caregivers means committing to the future, retaining those who commit, who resist… Improving the attractiveness of healthcare sectors and preserving the skills acquired so that we can continue to take care for each other. This is why my objective consists, in addition to the preservation and promotion of the health of health professionals, in developing an organization and a work culture allowing a positive image of the health professions to be restored. This is one of my priorities, in order to help restore their attractiveness while improving their work capacity. Because like you, I am convinced that a professional who is well is a professional who treats well. »
