Age-related Bone and Muscle Loss Increases Lung Function Problems: New Study

A new study found that as people age, bone weight and muscle mass decrease and body fat mass increases, the possibility of problems with lung function increases.

Kangbuk Samsung Hospital Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Professor Park Chul-hyun and Lim Han-sol majored in the research team are those who have been exposed to ‘osteoporosis – sarcopenic obesity (OSO)’, which refers to a comprehensive symptom in which the amount of body fat increases while the amount of bone and muscle decreases in the elderly population. A study recently published that the risk of obstructive pulmonary function significantly increased. This is the result of analyzing 28,623 adults over the age of 50 who underwent health checkups at the General Health Screening Center of Kangbuk Samsung Hospital between 2012 and 2018.

The research team divided into a normal group without osteopenia and obesity and a group with 1 to 3 corresponding symptoms for comparative analysis. As a result, the risk of lung dysfunction increased by 36% in the group with only one symptom compared to the normal group, and in the group with two symptoms overlapped, it increased to 47%. For OSO with all three symptoms overlapping, the risk increased by 64%.

Lung function was measured by the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), which is the maximum expiratory volume in one second after a deep inhalation. This means that when bone density and muscle mass decrease and obesity decreases, the ability to breathe also decreases rapidly.

Professor Park Cheol-hyun, who was in charge of the study, said, “By managing weight, preventing osteoporosis, and maintaining muscle mass in the elderly, it will be possible to prevent deterioration of lung function, especially the risk of obstructive pulmonary dysfunction.” “Supplying energy and protein through food or nutritional supplements It is important to maintain muscle mass through exercise.” The study was published in Nutrients, an international journal in the field of nutrition.
