Middle-aged men’s nose hair grows longer due to hormonal changes, and they must be careful not to injure themselves when plucking it out. / Photo = Clip Art Korea It is a natural phenomenon that the body and face change as they age. Not only do wrinkles appear, but the complexion of the face darkens, and in men, nose hair often becomes longer. Why is that?

◇UV rays make it easy to develop age spots
As you get older, your complexion becomes darker and your skin tends to look darker than when you were younger. This is because when exposed to ultraviolet rays for a long period of time, the melanin cells in the face are stimulated and blemishes such as age spots appear. Age spots are especially common on the face, neck, arms, and hands that secrete a lot of sebum. At first, it appears as a small drop-shaped dot, but over time, cells containing melanin pigment clump together, becoming larger and darker in color. Age spots are believed to be related to aging in that they begin to appear following the age of 40. There are also studies that show that the more exposure to UV rays, the more frequent the occurrence of age spots.

To prevent age spots and brighten dull skin color, you must carefully apply sunscreen. This will prevent UVA, which is the ultraviolet ray that causes skin aging, including age spots, freckles, and wrinkles. Apply 30 minutes before going out, and reapply frequently if you are out for a long time. It is also recommended to eat tomatoes, strawberries, and oranges, which are rich in vitamin C, which reduces pigmentation.

◇Nose hair becomes longer due to hormonal changes… Be careful when pulling out
In men, nose hair may grow longer due to hormonal changes. Testosterone, a male hormone, combines with 5-alpha reductase during the aging process and is converted into a metabolite called ‘dihydrotestosterone (DHT).’ DHT reaches the hair follicles in the eyebrows, nose, and chin to produce growth promoting factor (IGF-1). As we age, this DHT production increases, causing hair to grow longer.

However, it is not good to pull out nose hair carelessly. If you forcefully pull out nose hairs that are deeply embedded in the skin, it is easy to damage the pores. In severe cases, there is a risk that bacterial infection may cause inflammation, leading to meningitis or sepsis. Therefore, when trimming nose hair, it is best to use special scissors to slightly cut only the tip of the nose hair that sticks out. If you use a machine, make sure not to insert it too deep.
