Against inflation, the French choose refurbished smartphones (and computers)

Is refurbished the antidote to inflation? The fifth edition of the Smaaart/Ifop barometer shows a strong increase in purchases from second life professionals. It is now 37% of French people who have already bought a refurbished telephone (+ 5 points), a proportion which has doubled in five years, and more than 38% who still have no intention of doing so (-6 points ). The price remains, by far, the first criterion of choice.

A professionalized market

According to this study conducted in early October with a sample of 1,201 people aged 18 to 65, 41% of French people spontaneously cite price as the first decisive criterion. Environmental concerns occupy the last place of the podium (10%), behind the guarantee (12%), an order that shows less the disinterest of citizens for the planet than the fear of consumers for their acquisition.

Customers are indeed concerned regarding the lifespan of products (33%), their reliability (25%), and the seller’s ability to honor the warranty (10%). Obstacles that underline the importance of the professionalization of the sector. “The market for refurbished products has been considerably structured this year”explains Jean-Christophe Estoudre, president of Smaaart, “especially with the arrival of a new decree allowing the terms “reconditioned” and “reconditioned product” to be regulated”.
