The news took even the most knowledgeable observers of the kingdom by surprise. While South Africa is hosting, from August 22 to 24 in Johannesburg, the 15th summit of the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), Naledi Pandor, the South African Minister of Foreign Affairs, unveiled the list, until now partially confidential, of the countries having officially submitted their request to join the organization. Among the 23 candidates, five African countries: Algeria, Senegal, Egypt, Nigeria and, therefore, Morocco.
Algeria has been working for months to join the organization, et Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s recent trip to Beijing was seen by many as a prerequisite for the summit. Already in May 2022, Algeria, Senegal, Egypt and Nigeria took part in a virtual meeting called “Brics Plus”. But, for Morocco, it is a surprise and the authorities of the kingdom have not yet commented on the announcement of the minister South African.
