The 10 episodes of the Netflix drama ‘BEEF’, which won 8 awards at the Primetime Emmy Awards, the most prestigious award in the American broadcasting industry, on the 15th (local time) have poetic subtitles inspired by famous quotes. In particular, the subtitle of Episode 3, ‘Crying Lives Inside Me’, is a passage from the poem ‘Elm Tree’ by American poet Sylvia Plath (1932-1963). I opened the bookshelf of ‘Aerial: Restored Edition’, thinking that the subtitle and the content of episode 3, which shows the main character Danny (Steven Yeun) venting his emotions in front of his ex-lover, fit perfectly. ‘Aerial’ was written by Sylvia Plath in 1963. This collection of poems was first published in 1965, two years after leaving, and received worldwide praise. However, during the editing process, dozens of poems disappeared, and the order of the poems was changed, deviating from the author’s original intention. ‘Aerial: Restored Version’ is a translation that reproduces the manuscript that was left in the black notebook on the poet’s desk when she passed away.

“Crying lives inside me./Every night, it comes out flapping its wings/With its hooks, it searches for something to love.” (from the poem ‘Elm Tree’)

This poem was dedicated to a close friend of Plath’s before he committed suicide. The subtitle of episode 3 of ‘Angry People’ is taken from this passage. The original text ‘I am inhabited by a cry’ was translated by Netflix as ‘Crying lives inside me’, and ‘Aerial: Restored Edition’ translated it as ‘Crying lives inside me’. Plath’s pain is clearly felt in a sentence in which he describes to his best friend as if crying had built a home in his heart. Particularly impressive is the depiction of crying, an emotion, as if it were a living thing, flapping its wings and extending its hook.

The poetry collection does not only contain poems expressing negative emotions. The poet sings about freedom, saying, “How free you are, you don’t know, how free you are” (from the poem ‘Tulip’). There are poems filled with affection, such as “Love, the world/suddenly changes color and changes” (from the poem ‘November Letter’). In particular, the first word in the poetry collection is ‘love’ and the last word is ‘spring’. Although Plath had an unfortunate life after losing her father at a young age and divorcing her cheating husband, she tried to find hope at least at the beginning and end of her poetry collection.

The subtitle of Episode 1 of ‘Angry People’, ‘Birds don’t sing, they cry out in pain’ was inspired by the words of German film director Werner Herzog (82) and marks the beginning of a work that deals with the pain of modern people. The subtitle of Episode 10, ‘The Shape of Light,’ is taken from a sentence by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961), who said, “Enlightenment is not achieved by imagining the shape of light, but by noticing the darkness,” and is a symbol of reconciliation(?) It hints at the ending of a work that seeks . For those who have finished binge-watching ‘Angry People,’ why not think about the subtitles and find the fun of interpretation?
