After thefts: New director for the British Museum

This was announced yesterday. Cullinan succeeds interim boss Mark Jones and previous director Hartwig Fischer. The German had relinquished his leadership position earlier than planned following a veritable series of thefts in his home became known.

The institution made it public in the summer that around 2,000 objects from its holdings were missing, stolen or damaged. An employee was fired. The supervisory board and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have now approved Cullinan’s appointment. The British Museum houses important cultural treasures of humanity, such as the Rosetta Stone, which helped decipher hieroglyphs.
