After the security summit: the number of asylum seekers in Steyregg will be halved

This meeting was eagerly awaited: The security summit took place in Steyregg today, to which Mayor Gerhard Hintringer (SP) had invited people following the incidents at the asylum center in the Steyregg industrial area. As reported, following a series of false alarms, a garbage container burned in front of the accommodation, and firefighters felt that residents were hindered and harassed while extinguishing the fire. The consequences of this were discussed for more than two hours today. According to Hintringer, the atmosphere for discussions was very good, and the Federal Care Agency (BBU) responsible for the area also spoke of a constructive discussion.

The number of young people is halved

It was agreed that the number of people who were repented was reduced by half to around 60. At the same time, staff is being increased; more than 20 BBU employees are looking following the young people. That will also be increased Security service. Instead of two, there will be five security employees on site at all times. On the night of the fire, only two supervisors were on site, for which the BBU was heavily criticized.

More intensive communication

Communication from the BBU should also be intensified. There is already regular communication with the emergency services organizations, and now the community should also be involved “so that we can react quickly and directly to future problems,” says a BBU spokesman. Confidence-building measures in the community were also discussed. For example, you might organize joint garbage collection campaigns with the residents.

Closure is not up for debate

Closing the accommodation, as recently requested by the community, was not up for debate. The BBU points out the obligation to look following the young people. Steyregg is the only accommodation for unaccompanied minor refugees in Upper Austria; there are only four others nationwide. The young people are accommodated in these quarters until a decision has been made regarding admission to the asylum procedure or until they are subsequently taken over to a state quarter. In this context, BBU managing director Andreas Achrainer appealed to the federal states to create “more capacity for the young people who have already been admitted to the procedure”.

In addition to Achrainer and Hintringer, the two deputy mayors of Steyregg, district captain Paul Gruber and representatives of the fire department and police also took part in the conversation.
