The anger then was great.
Strange game abandonment in English football: The game between the women’s teams of Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC ended following just six minutes due to a frozen pitch. Chelsea manager Emma Hayes was furious followingwards.
Above all, she criticized the FA Football Association. On the club’s website, she was quoted as follows: “It is not the coaches who decide whether a game takes place, but the FA and its representatives.” But there were no FA officials there. “You might see right from the start that the field on the sides resembled an ice rink.”
Lawn heaters are required
The pitch in West London’s Kingsmeadow stadium was released following an inspection two hours before the game started on Sunday followingnoon. Attempts were made in some places to warm up the playing field with the help of radiant heaters and a large tent. But shortly following the kick-off, players kept sliding across the pitch and violent collisions ensued.
The Chelsea coach also called for undersoil heating to be mandatory for matches in the Women’s Super League. Hayes said: “No game at the highest level of women’s football should be cancelled. We need heating – we don’t live in Barbados.” You have to take the game seriously. Liverpool manager Matt Beard also stressed that the game should never have started.
“Fortunately no one was hurt”
And players from other teams were also appalled. Canada international Janine Beckie wrote on Twitter: “This is unacceptable and players deserve to play on suitable surfaces where this is not the case. We’re a long way from that in women’s football!”
Arsenal player Vivienne Miedema tweeted: “The safety of the players should always come first. Luckily nobody was hurt today.” The only way to fix the problem is to install heating or have the games take place in men’s stadiums.
In many parts of England, temperatures below freezing made for slippery roads. Numerous games in the lower leagues and in youth football were canceled for men – usually well before kick-off.
