After the fire in the old people’s home, the Vilnius municipality will review the fire safety of the institutions

“In the near future, the damage caused by the fire will be assessed and a decision will be made regarding the repair of the premises. It is also intended to review the fire safety preparation and emergency action plans of other social institutions under the municipality,” said G. Grubinskas.

According to him, according to the municipality’s knowledge, the fire in “Senevita” did not occur due to errors of the fire protection system or the administration, but the exact causes and circumstances will be determined by the pre-trial investigation conducted by the officials.

During a fire on Thursday evening in the “Senevita” branch of the old people’s home in Vilnius, on Balžio street, two men died, and three more people were taken to the hospital with smoke poisoning.

As reported by the Police Department, at 11:54 p.m. after the fire was extinguished, the burnt bodies of two men were found in a room in the care home for the elderly. They lived in one room.

According to the director of “Senevitas”, Petr Jurgil, the fire could have been caused by the smoking of the deceased. According to Mr. Jurgil, nursing home residents who smoke constantly cause problems, they do not always respond properly to comments.

According to the firefighters, more than 30 residents were evacuated from the nursing home for the elderly to the adjacent building. Grandfathers were transported in wheelchairs, carried.

After the fire, the building cannot be used yet – it was covered in smoke, filled with water, and its windows were broken during the evacuation of the elderly.

The institution announces that it provides social care services to elderly persons, adults with disabilities and persons suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other degenerative diseases of the central nervous system, who require complex, constant care by specialists.

Residents of 33 care units were accommodated in double rooms on Balžio Street.
